Breitungen's volunteer-run community bus secures vital district funding

Breitungen’s community bus service has secured financial backing from the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district. The funding will help maintain operations for residents who struggle with transport access, including older adults and those with mobility challenges. A formal ceremony to present the grant is scheduled for this week. The project has been recognised as a success, making Breitungen one of the first towns in the district to establish a working community bus. The service fills gaps in public transport, relying on volunteer drivers to cover routes. It operates on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding public holidays.

Residents in Breitungen and nearby towns—such as Fambach, Wernshausen, Trusetal, Barchfeld-Immelborn, and Bad Liebenstein—benefit from the service. The district will cover 100% of eligible operational costs, with a yearly limit of €5,000 per project. On Wednesday at 4 p.m., District Administrator Peggy Greiser will hand over the funding notification at the town hall courtyard on Rathausstraße 24. Mayor Ronny Römhild will receive the grant on behalf of the community bus initiative.

The funding ensures continued support for a service that helps those without private transport or adequate public transit options. The district’s contribution will cover essential costs, allowing the volunteer-run buses to keep operating across the region. The ceremony marks the official confirmation of this financial backing.
