Bremen Launches New Council to Strengthen Diversity and Integration Policies
The Bremen Council for Participation and Diversity in Migration Society has been inaugurated, marking a significant step in the city's efforts to foster integration and diversity. The council's structure has been modernized and expanded following a resolution by the Social Affairs Committee in June 2025.
The constitutive plenary session took place in the historic Wallsaal of the State and University Library. Nadezhda Milanova, Bremen’s Commissioner for Migration and Integration, stressed the importance of including perspectives from people with migration backgrounds to ensure successful news and participatory policies. The council, with 77 percent of its members having a migration background and over half being women, aims to critically engage with and shape the state’s integration policies.
In February 2026, a new executive board will be elected, and working groups established at the next plenary session. The outgoing three-member board will remain in office until then to ensure a smooth transition. Despite the search results not providing the name of the new chairman of the Executive Committee, who will be elected in February 2026, the council's term will last until September 2029.
The newly inaugurated Bremen Council is set to play a crucial role in shaping the city's integration news, with a diverse membership that reflects the city's demographic. The election of a new executive board and establishment of working groups in February 2026 will further strengthen the council's capacity to engage with and influence integration efforts.
