FDP Education Spokesperson Fynn Voigt Criticizes Bremen's Cuts to Literacy and Math Support Programs

Bremen's education cuts spark backlash over scrapped remedial courses

Fynn Voigt, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) education policy spokesperson in Bremen's state parliament, has condemned the red-green-red Senate's decision to eliminate remedial courses for children in reading, writing, and mathematics. He argues that language support, in particular, must be a top priority as the foundation for equal opportunity in education.

Voigt stated: "Instead of cutting back, we need to invest more—after all, proficiency in German is crucial for a child's entire educational journey, and that's beyond dispute. Yet Bremen would rather pour millions into frivolous programs like the free public transport pass while letting academic standards plummet."

A Matter of the Right Priorities

Voigt emphasized that it is unrealistic to expect parents from disadvantaged backgrounds to spend hundreds of euros on private tutoring. In this case, state support would finally make a real difference. The FDP has therefore proposed a plan to the Bürgerschaft (state parliament) for mandatory, affordable tutoring in core subjects—German, math, and English. As Voigt put it, "Education isn't necessarily about money—it's about setting the right priorities."
