Bremen's quick fix for school shortages: Portable classrooms to the rescue

Bremen's Gröpelingen District Faces Shortage of 40 School Places for Next Year's Fifth Graders—Senator Proposes Temporary Solution

Bremen's Senator for Children and Education has unveiled a pragmatic interim plan to address an expected shortfall of around 40 school places for fifth-grade students in the Gröpelingen district next year.

To quickly provide reliable, locally accessible schooling and educational opportunities for children in the area, the core measures of the solution include:

  • Short-term use of modular buildings: The portable classrooms currently housing the Ohlenhof welcome school in Gröpelingen will be repurposed to accommodate at least two additional fifth-grade classes for the 2026/27 school year. The site will initially operate as a satellite campus of a nearby secondary school.
  • Merger of welcome schools: The Ohlenhof welcome school will be integrated into the Ellmersstraße welcome school. Approximately 140 students and staff will relocate to the Ellmersstraße site in the neighboring district of Walle, where sufficient space is available.

Mark Rackles, Senator for Children and Education, stated: "Since its founding in 2022, the Ohlenhof welcome school's dedicated team has given many newly arrived children a strong start in Germany's education system. Now, we aim to further develop the school pedagogically and strengthen it as a language-sensitive learning environment. Our approach emphasizes continuous language development, intensive reading support, team teaching, and multidisciplinary assistance. What matters most to me is this: we're not just creating more capacity—we're ensuring quality education." However, the proposed relocation must first be reviewed by the relevant committees, with a final decision from the Deputation still pending.
