teilAuto shifts to cooperative model, opening public membership in 2026

teilAuto is changing its business model to become a cooperative, opening membership to the public from 1 May 2026. The move allows users and supporters to take ownership of the company while shaping its future direction. Membership will require an application, acceptance of bylaws, and an investment in shares. The cooperative model offers different membership tiers, each with its own benefits. The one-share option costs €300 and includes voting rights, no deposit requirement, and potential dividend payments. For €600, the two-share model removes the monthly base fee in the standard rate plan.

Higher investment levels, such as the ten-share model, provide additional perks. These include waiving the monthly base fee for high-mileage plans or offering time discounts for business customers. Regardless of the number of shares held, all members retain equal voting rights. Kornelia Ehrlich, a long-time teilAuto user from Leipzig, described the shift as a deeper form of engagement. She sees membership as a way to take on greater responsibility within the cooperative. The company’s goal is to reduce reliance on external investors and instead build a sustainable future through collective support.

From next May, teilAuto will operate as a cooperative, giving members a direct stake in its operations. The new structure introduces flexible membership options, ensuring financial and decision-making accessibility. The transition marks a shift toward a community-driven approach to carsharing.
