Germany demands Iran halt nuclear ambitions and reopen Strait of Hormuz
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for Iran to abandon its nuclear weapons programme and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. His remarks came after a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, highlighting growing diplomatic pressure on Tehran. Wadephul stressed that Iran must fully and verifiably give up nuclear weapons. He also demanded the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global oil exports.
During the call, the German minister made clear that Berlin and Washington share the same goal: stopping Iran’s nuclear ambitions and ensuring free passage through the strait. Wadephul later posted his message on social media, reaffirming Germany’s support for a negotiated solution.
The exchange follows ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran. According to CNN, Wadephul’s statement signals closer diplomatic alignment between Germany and the United States on the issue. The call between Wadephul and Araghchi underscores the international push to de-escalate tensions. Germany’s position now aligns more closely with Washington’s demands on Iran’s nuclear programme and maritime access. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key focus amid the diplomatic standoff.
