Saxony-Anhalt invests €3M to boost elevator access in older homes
Saxony-Anhalt has launched a new funding programme to improve accessibility in municipal housing. The state will provide €3 million to help install and upgrade elevators in residential buildings. Officials say the move aims to support older residents, families with children, and people with limited mobility. The scheme offers grants of up to 50% of eligible costs for elevator retrofits, with a maximum of €10,000 per apartment. Each approved project can receive as much as €120,000 in financial support. Dr. Lydia Hüskens, Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs, explained that the goal is to enable independent living and make buildings more accessible.
The funds come from the state’s special infrastructure budget. Applications are now open through the Investment Bank of Saxony-Anhalt’s customer portal at www.ib-sachsen-anhalt.de. The programme targets existing housing stock, helping to adapt it for an ageing population and changing household needs. The initiative will run until the allocated €3 million is fully distributed. Property owners and housing associations can apply immediately for grants. Successful projects will receive funding to cover part of the installation or modernisation costs.
