California's 45th District braces for heated 2025 primary showdown
California’s 45th Congressional District is set for a competitive primary in June 2025. Incumbent Democrat Derek Tran, who won the seat in 2024, will face five Republican challengers. The race comes as Democrats hold an 8-point voter registration lead in the district. Tran secured the seat last year by defeating Republican Michelle Steel by over 600 votes. The district covers parts of north Orange County and Los Angeles County, where roughly a quarter of voters have no party preference.
The five Republican candidates vying for the seat are Tom Vo, Chi Charlie Nguyen, Chuong Vo, Amy Phan West, and Mark Leonard. They will compete in the June 2, 2025, primary to determine who advances to the general election. The outcome of the primary will shape the November 2025 general election. With Democrats holding a registration advantage but a significant independent voter bloc, the race remains closely watched. Tran’s re-election bid will depend on maintaining support in a politically mixed district.
