Mainz debates turning historic Neutorschule into cultural hub at 100
The historic Neutorschule in Mainz’s Old Town marks its 100th anniversary this year. Now, local politicians are debating how best to use the building’s space. The SPD faction has put forward a plan to turn parts of it into cultural venues. Council members Ilona Mende-Daum and Björn Witczak want to repurpose rooms on the upper floor for cultural activities. They argue that the Old Town lacks affordable spaces for artists, musicians, and community events. The proposal comes as the city reviews options for the building’s future.
The city’s response, signed by Deputy Mayor Manuela Matz, remains cautious. Officials have not yet committed to the cultural plan but admit that hosting events in the Neutorschule is 'conceivable'. So far, the only confirmed uses include a daycare centre, facilities for the Altstadtbauern group, and a small school museum.
The SPD stresses that more cultural spaces are needed in the area. They hope the Neutorschule could help fill this gap while preserving its historical value. The debate over the Neutorschule’s future continues as the building reaches its centennial. While some rooms may become cultural spaces, the city has only finalised plans for a daycare, a museum, and facilities for local farmers. Further decisions will depend on ongoing discussions between officials and the SPD.
