California's 48th District race could reshape Southern politics forever

A high-stakes special election is underway in California’s 48th Congressional District. The race has drawn intense attention as Democrats aim to flip a seat once held firmly by Republicans. The contest follows the sudden retirement of longtime GOP incumbent Darrell Issa, leaving the district open for the first time in years. The 48th District covers parts of San Diego and Riverside counties, including Palm Springs. Once a Republican stronghold, recent redistricting has shifted the balance slightly in favour of Democrats. A win here could help the party regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Democratic field is crowded, with two frontrunners emerging. San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert secured a majority of delegates’ votes at the California Democratic Party convention, falling just short of an official endorsement. Ammar Campa-Najjar, another prominent candidate, won 18% of the delegates’ support. On the Republican side, former President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Jim Desmond. Meanwhile, Palm Springs Democrat Brandon Riker is gaining ground, bolstered by a larger campaign war chest than his rivals.

The outcome of this race could reshape the political landscape in Southern California. With Democrats eyeing a potential pickup and Republicans fighting to hold the seat, the contest remains one of the most closely watched in the state. Voters will decide who replaces Issa in a district now seen as a battleground.
