CDU lawmaker slams SPD for blocking Germany's urgent economic reforms

CDU lawmaker Johannes Volkmann has stepped up criticism of the SPD, claiming they are blocking vital economic reforms. He argues that these changes are not up for negotiation but essential to protect Germany’s industrial base.

Volkmann’s remarks come as the coalition approaches its first year in office, with growing frustration among businesses and workers over delayed action.

Volkmann insists that the government must act now to push through an 'ambitious reform agenda'. He proposes cutting payroll taxes, slashing bureaucracy, reducing energy costs, and easing regulations to boost the economy.

His criticism targets the SPD directly, accusing them of lacking the will to reform—a familiar complaint from conservative politicians. Yet he acknowledges that the coalition has made key decisions on security and migration, proving it can act decisively when needed. The lawmaker warns that without a shift in direction, political stability could become the main goal rather than meaningful progress. Business leaders and employees, he says, have moved from hope to 'incomprehension, frustration, and at times resignation' over the past year. Volkmann stresses that the coalition’s success will hinge on delivering an economic recovery within its first year. Failure to do so, he suggests, risks prolonging an unsustainable status quo.

The pressure on the SPD to support economic reforms is growing. Volkmann’s demands reflect wider concerns about Germany’s industrial future and the government’s ability to act.

If no changes come, businesses and workers may face continued uncertainty, while the coalition’s credibility could weaken further.
