China Rolls Out Red Carpet for Putin and Trump—With Key Differences
China hosted two high-profile visitors in recent months, offering both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump similar state ceremonies. The welcoming events took place at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, with red carpets, official receptions, and negotiations in the East Hall. Yet the composition of the delegations and the officials greeting them differed noticeably.
When Donald Trump arrived, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met him at the airport. The US delegation then proceeded to the Great Hall of the People for a formal ceremony. Negotiations followed in the East Hall, where Trump’s meetings with Chinese leaders were attended almost entirely by men.
Vladimir Putin’s visit began with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi welcoming him. The Russian delegation was notably larger, including five deputy prime ministers, eight ministers, and heads of major state corporations. Unlike Trump’s discussions, Putin’s talks featured several female officials from both sides. Despite the differences in delegation size and gender representation, China maintained consistent ceremonial protocols for both leaders. Each received a red carpet welcome, an official ceremony, and negotiations in the same historic hall.
The visits highlighted China’s diplomatic approach, where ceremonial traditions remained uniform regardless of the guest. Trump’s delegation was smaller and predominantly male, while Putin’s included more officials and a greater gender mix. Both leaders, however, experienced the same level of formal reception during their time in Beijing.
