Davao lawmaker faces backlash over Sara Duterte impeachment support

The impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte has sparked division in the Davao Region. Israelito Torreon, her defence counsel, has called on Rep. John Tracy Cagas to reverse his support for the case. Cagas remains the only lawmaker from the area backing the bid, which has faced strong local opposition.

Rep. John Tracy Cagas signed the impeachment complaint, making him the sole representative from Davao to do so. The document, one of several filed in the House of Representatives, alleges graft and corruption. It currently awaits preliminary review to check if it meets the required legal standards.

Backlash against Cagas has grown in his home district. Constituents have criticised his stance, with some vandalising his campaign materials. Torreon, a registered voter in Bansalan, Davao del Sur, argued that most residents oppose the impeachment push. Cagas defended his decision, stating the complaint met the necessary criteria in form and substance. However, Torreon urged him to reconsider if the case reaches the plenary. He asked Cagas to vote against the Articles of Impeachment, citing the will of his constituents. The House will first assess whether the complaint has enough grounds before any potential Senate trial. Over 200 lawmakers have already backed the bid, but its future remains uncertain.

The dispute highlights a split between local sentiment and Cagas’ political stance. If the complaint advances, his vote could prove decisive. Meanwhile, the House continues its evaluation before any further action is taken.
