Deadly Berlin apartment fire leaves one hospitalized and home destroyed

Berlin (dpa/bb) — A fire completely gutted an apartment in a multi-family home in the Kladow district early Wednesday, leaving one person hospitalized with severe smoke inhalation, according to a fire department spokesperson. Another individual sustained minor injuries. Authorities did not immediately release further details about those affected, though both are believed to have been inside the apartment and managed to escape on their own.

Emergency services received a call around 3 a.m. reporting a blaze at a building on Contessaweg in Berlin's Spandau borough. When firefighters arrived, flames were already shooting out of the apartment's windows. The fire had fully engulfed the unit and spread to the building's facade, the spokesperson said.

Some 80 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze completely. The rest of the building's apartments remained intact, officials confirmed, but the fire-damaged unit was left uninhabitable.
