Deutsche Bahn axes Oh, Rail! campaign amid public funding backlash
Deutsche Bahn has announced the end of its Oh, Rail! campaign, which will not continue in 2025 or 2026. The decision follows growing criticism over the use of public funds for the series, starring Anke Engelke as a train manager facing everyday rail challenges. The campaign has faced sharp criticism from politicians and union leaders. SPD spokesperson Sebastian Fiedler called the spending a 'scandal,' arguing the money could have paid for extra security staff instead. Martin Burkert, head of the EVG rail workers' union, also questioned the priorities, suggesting funds should have gone towards renovating staff break rooms or providing body cameras for employees.
Deutsche Bahn has confirmed the series will not return but has refused to reveal the campaign’s total cost, citing confidentiality. The backlash centres on whether public money was spent wisely while other rail issues remain unresolved. The campaign’s cancellation means Oh, Rail! will no longer appear. Critics have highlighted alternative uses for the funds, such as improving staff safety and working conditions. Deutsche Bahn has not addressed these suggestions directly.
