Deutsche Bahn freezes fares and launches summer pass amid punctuality struggles
Deutsche Bahn has introduced new measures to ease travel costs and improve services. The rail operator will freeze ticket prices for the next year and has launched a summer travel pass. These moves come as punctuality on long-distance routes continues to decline. From mid-June to mid-September, passengers can use a flat-rate summer pass for unlimited travel across Germany. The pass covers up to five people and aims to help families and travellers facing high fuel costs. CEO Evelyn Palla stressed that everyone, especially children, should have the chance to go on holiday.
Since 9 May, Deutsche Bahn has also been selling last-minute tickets starting at €6.99. These discounted fares are designed to fill empty seats on long-distance trains. The company hopes this will make travel more affordable during a period of rising expenses.
Punctuality remains a major challenge, with fewer than 60% of long-distance trains arriving on time. This marks a significant drop from 80% in 2020. Palla admitted that fixing reliability issues will require sustained effort. She asked passengers for patience as the company works to reverse the decline. The price freeze and summer pass offer short-term relief for travellers struggling with inflation. Deutsche Bahn’s focus now shifts to improving punctuality over the coming months. The operator has acknowledged the scale of the task ahead.
