Bremen's bold plan to turn a racecourse into housing sparks fierce debate

Bremen is struggling with a severe housing shortage, pushing officials to explore new development options. One proposed solution involves transforming the disused racecourse grounds in the Vahr district into a mix of housing and green spaces. The plan has sparked both support and opposition from local groups. Senator for Economic Affairs Kristina Vogt first suggested building homes on the old racecourse site. Her proposal aimed to ease pressure on the housing market, particularly in Bremen’s east, where conditions have shifted since a 2019 referendum.

The Bremen Chamber of Commerce (IHK) quickly backed the idea. Its president, André Grobien, praised the plan to blend new housing with green areas on the site. The IHK for Bremen and Bremerhaven later welcomed a detailed strategy paper from Senator for Construction Özlem Ünsal. Ünsal’s paper outlined a transparent approach to financial challenges and called for citizen involvement in the process. However, local residents have voiced strong objections to the development plans.

The racecourse redevelopment remains a contentious issue despite its potential benefits. Supporters argue that building homes near workplaces could reduce environmental impact. Meanwhile, opposition from residents suggests further debate before any decisions are made.
