Drunk BMW driver found asleep after crashing into Essen fence
Essen-Westviertel: Drunk Driver Loses License After Crashing, Attacking Officer
A man in Essen spent the start of the Easter weekend without his car or driver's license after crashing his BMW into a fence while intoxicated, falling asleep at the wheel, and later assaulting a police officer. His early "Easter gifts" came in the form of criminal charges.
At around 6 a.m. on Friday (April 3), a 19-year-old witness spotted the crashed BMW on Bargmannstraße and immediately called the police. When officers arrived, they found the driver asleep behind the wheel. He had apparently driven into a nearby fence. Police detected a strong smell of alcohol inside the vehicle and woke the man. Instead of complying, however, the 38-year-old—who holds both German and Polish citizenship—violently resisted. He was uninjured in the crash.
Officers eventually pulled the man from the car and took him into custody. A doctor drew a blood sample at the station, while a voluntary breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of approximately 2.2 per mille. Police confiscated the BMW, along with the man's driver's license and professional truck driver's card.
During the struggle, one officer sustained minor injuries but remained on duty.
The 38-year-old now faces charges of resisting law enforcement and endangering road traffic due to drunk driving.
