Durango protests erupt after ICE detains Colombian asylum seekers and confronts activist
Protests erupted following the detention on October 27 of three Colombian asylum seekers—a man and two children—while they were on their way to school that morning.
In late October, demonstrators gathered outside the facilities of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) in Durango.
The confrontation began when Stagi was filming an agent as he removed camping equipment near a building.
Stagi, a retired hypnotherapist, said she tapped the agent on the shoulder to get his attention, after which he grabbed her by the hair, wrapped his arm around her neck, and dragged her down the street.
The agency has confirmed that the officer is under investigation.
The Colorado State Patrol has launched its own probe at the request of Durango Police Chief Brice Current, who raised concerns about potential violations of state law—a request described as rare, if not unprecedented.
