On National Urban Development Funding Day, held this year under the theme "Vibrant Places, Strong Communities," the city of Halle (Saale), together with the Halle-Neustadt Housing Cooperative (Halle-Neustädter Wohnungsgenossenschaft e.G.), will showcase the "Niedersachsenplatz Community and Activity Center" ("Atrium") as well as ongoing developments in Neustadt's VI residential district. The event, taking place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will highlight a flagship urban development project in the Neustadt neighborhood.
Halle's Urban Development Day Unveils New Community Hub and Green Projects
The day's activities at Niedersachsenplatz will be part of a small family festival centered around the future Community and Activity Center, featuring a sandbox out front, an art table inside, and food stalls. The Halle-Neustadt Housing Cooperative will present its construction plans for the center and offer guided tours of the nearly completed site. Meanwhile, the Halle (Saale) city administration will outline its vision for the surrounding green corridor, "The Green Ribbon of Generations," and organize a guided bike tour exploring both historic and contemporary artworks in Neustadt. The Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg will also participate, presenting its research projects "MobileS" and health counseling initiatives, which focus on urban planning that supports mobility and well-being, particularly for older adults and those with limited mobility.
Program:
- After welcoming remarks by representatives of Halle (Saale) and the Halle-Neustadt Housing Cooperative at 11:30 a.m., a guided bike tour, "Art in Halle-Neustadt: Old and New Works," will depart at 11:45 a.m.. Led by Stephan Pönack, team leader for urban development in the city's North/West planning division, the tour will last approximately one hour.
- Between 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., presentations will take place at the future Community and Activity Center:
- Sven Weber, board member of the Halle-Neustadt Housing Cooperative, will introduce the health center construction project.
- Christiane Lütgert, acting head of urban development and planning for the city, will present "The Green Ribbon of Generations."
- Researchers from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg will showcase the neighborhood-based "MobileS" project (focusing on rollator use in the district) and their health counseling initiative.
- Andreas Rühl, head of heritage conservation for the city, will discuss preservation efforts in Neustadt.
- At 12:30 p.m., the first guided tour of the construction site will begin, with additional tours starting at 1:30 p.m.
- The presentations and talks will be repeated at 2 p.m.

Admission to Urban Development Funding Day in Neustadt is free, and no registration is required. For safety reasons, visitors may only access designated areas of the construction site and must stay on approved paths. Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.
