Durham University Launches First Alumni Angel Network for Startups
Durham University has launched its first Alumni Angel Network, a new initiative to support early-stage businesses. The programme, led by Enterprise Manager Chris Gilman, connects student and graduate entrepreneurs with experienced investors from around the world. It marks the first network of its kind at a UK university. The network was established by the university’s Venture Lab, which focuses on fostering entrepreneurship among students and graduates. So far, seven businesses founded by Durham alumni have pitched their ideas to members. These pitches span industries like FinTech, EdTech, and sports sciences.
The group consists of 26 qualified 'angels' with backgrounds in entrepreneurship, finance, and professional services. Their role is to provide not just capital but also expertise, insight, and practical experience to help startups grow. The network’s goal is to back businesses that tackle pressing challenges and disrupt their markets. With its diverse pool of investors, the Durham Alumni Angel Network aims to strengthen support for early-stage ventures. The initiative offers funding alongside mentorship, helping alumni turn innovative ideas into scalable businesses. This model sets a new standard for university-backed entrepreneurship in the UK.
