Edmonton may rename street to 'Forever Canadian Avenue' in unity push

A stretch of road near the Alberta legislature in Edmonton may soon bear a new name. City councillor Michael Janz has proposed renaming part of 99th Avenue to 'Forever Canadian Avenue'. The move aims to honour a grassroots campaign that united Albertans in support of staying within Canada.

The idea stems from the 'Forever Canadian' petition, which gathered over 400,000 verified signatures. The document called for a referendum or legislative vote on the question: Do you agree that Alberta should remain within Canada? Organisers hoped to counter separatist sentiment in the province.

Meanwhile, a separatist group’s own petition for a referendum was dismissed by a judge. The ruling cited procedural flaws and a failure to consult First Nations. Premier Danielle Smith has acknowledged Albertans’ frustration with Ottawa but maintains her support for a sovereign Alberta *within* a united Canada. Janz argues that separatist discussions threaten investment and job growth in the region. To mark the 'Forever Canadian' movement, he will submit a formal renaming request to Edmonton’s Naming Committee. If approved, the new street name could debut in time for Canada Day celebrations in July.

The proposed 'Forever Canadian Avenue' would sit beside the provincial legislature, serving as a visible reminder of the petition’s impact. With the separatist group’s legal setback and strong public backing for unity, the street’s potential renaming reflects a defining moment in Alberta’s recent political history.
