Elderly Essen couple loses life savings in heartless doorstep scam
An elderly couple in Essen fell victim to a cruel scam after fraudsters tricked them into handing over a five-figure sum. The 92-year-olds were targeted at their home on Himmelpforten Street, with the suspects posing as people in urgent need. Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information.
The incident took place at around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14. The scammers contacted the couple, falsely claiming their daughter required money for hospital treatment. Just 15 minutes after the call, a man arrived at their home and collected the cash along with a gold coin.
The suspect is described as a man aged between 40 and 50, standing around 5'7 tall. He had a stocky build, shaved black hair, and appeared to be of Southeastern European descent. At the time, he was dressed in sporty summer clothing. Essen police are now asking residents in the Himmelpforten Street area to report any suspicious activity they may have noticed around the time of the incident.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious when dealing with unexpected calls or visits. They advise never handing over money, bank cards, or valuables to unknown individuals. The investigation into the fraud remains ongoing.
