Bielefeld scam leaves pedestrian with worthless Belarusian rubles
A man tricked a 23-year-old pedestrian in Bielefeld into exchanging euros for worthless Belarusian rubles. The incident took place near Friedrich-Verleger-Straße on a weekday afternoon. Police are now searching for the suspect and his accomplices.
Around 2 p.m., the suspect approached the victim, claiming his bank card had stopped working. He asked the young man to exchange several hundred euros for Belarusian rubles. The victim agreed but later realised the bills were old, out-of-circulation currency.
The man was described as South Asian in appearance, between 160 and 170 cm tall, with a stocky build. He had black hair and a full black beard. A woman wearing a headscarf and a child, roughly two years old, were also seen in the suspect’s vehicle—a dark Audi coupé with red licence plates. After discovering the deception, the victim filed a report with the police. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Criminal Investigation Division 15.
The victim lost several hundred euros in the scam. Police continue to investigate the incident and are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with details about the suspect or the vehicle is encouraged to come forward.
