Hesse's Korex sees fivefold surge in anti-extremism efforts amid political shifts

The Competence Center on Right-Wing Extremism (Korex) has seen a major rise in its activities over recent years. Founded in 2008, the organisation specialises in preventing far-right extremism through courses and advisory services, particularly in schools. Between 2021 and 2024, the number of events it organised jumped from 55 to 281—a fivefold increase—before slightly dropping to 259 in 2025. Korex’s rapid expansion aligns with a shift in Hesse’s political landscape. In early 2024, the state government changed from a black-green coalition to a black-red one. Around the same time, the organisation’s outreach efforts surged more than ninefold within two years.

The centre’s work extends beyond schools to include police forces, fire departments, and sports clubs. Its services range from teacher training and parent evenings to direct conversations with students. In 2024, Korex director Sven Daniel delivered a lecture at Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Bad Vilbel, addressing far-right activities on social media. The event was co-organised by ‘Grandmothers Against the Far Right’ and the school’s ‘Queer Café’. Hesse’s domestic intelligence agency, the Verfassungsschutz, has also scaled up its efforts. In 2025, it held 166 outreach events in cultural and educational settings—up from 120 in 2024 and just 18 in 2023.

Korex now plays a far larger role in combating right-wing extremism across Hesse. The organisation’s expanded activities reflect broader efforts by state agencies to engage with schools and public institutions. With events nearly five times more frequent than in 2021, its influence in education and prevention continues to grow.
