Herbolzheim to vote on reinstating integration commissioner for refugees
Herbolzheim’s town council will vote on May 21, 2026, to decide whether to reintroduce the half-time integration commissioner role. The proposal comes from the SPD, which argues that stronger finances now allow for the position’s return. Funding of up to €10,000 could help cover some of the expected costs.
The SPD parliamentary group has pushed for the role’s reinstatement as part of the 2026 staffing plan. They see integration support for refugees and immigrants as a core duty of the municipality. The position had been reviewed earlier during budget talks, alongside other temporary posts.
According to administrative estimates, the half-time role would cost around €42,000 annually in personnel expenses. However, actual spending in 2026 would depend on when the position is filled. The council agenda notes that if approved, a supplementary budget request would be needed to cover the extra costs this fiscal year. The SPD’s proposal follows an improvement in the town’s finances, partly due to higher business tax revenues. This has opened the door for reinvestment in areas like integration support.
The decision on May 21 will determine whether the integration commissioner returns. If approved, the council must secure additional funding for the role’s immediate costs. The position would then be filled based on the timing of the budget adjustments.
