Emma Thompson joins fight against Zurich's controversial McDonald's plan

Plans for a new McDonald's on Zurich's Limmatquai have triggered strong opposition from locals and high-profile figures. A petition against the fast-food outlet has already collected around 1,600 signatures, with organisers pushing for 2,000. Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson has now joined the campaign, calling the proposal an 'act of self-harm' for the city. The proposed restaurant, set for Limmatquai 48, is owned by Swiss Life, which has already signed a lease with McDonald's. But residents argue the 24-hour operating hours—extending until 5 a.m.—will break legal noise limits and disrupt the area. A local association has also raised concerns about waste, increased traffic near schools, and the loss of existing community spaces.

The dispute mirrors wider resistance across Switzerland, where similar petitions in Zürich (Dübendorf/Stettbach) and Uznach SG have quickly gathered 1,000–2,000 signatures. Despite protests, McDonald's has secured regulatory approval for past projects and plans to open 4–6 new locations annually in the country. The company insists it meets all legal requirements for noise and waste management. The final decision now lies with Zurich's cantonal construction appeals court. If the ruling goes against them, the residents' group has vowed to escalate the fight to the administrative court and even the Federal Supreme Court.

The campaign has gained traction with Thompson's involvement, adding pressure on authorities to reconsider. The outcome will determine whether the fast-food chain can proceed with its plans or face further legal challenges. For now, the city awaits the court's verdict on the controversial project.
