Leipzig Honors EU's Chief Prosecutor with Democracy Award - Europe's Top Prosecutor Laura Kövesi Wins Prestigious Democracy Prize in Leipzig
Democracy, freedom of expression, enlightenment: The values behind the Robert Blum Prize and why the EU's chief prosecutor is receiving it.
Laura Codruța Kövesi, the first European Chief Prosecutor, will be awarded the City of Leipzig's Robert Blum Prize for Democracy. The honor will be presented by Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) on March 3, the city announced.
The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to democracy, freedom of expression, enlightenment, nonviolent change, and efforts to foster understanding—whether within Germany, across Europe, or globally—all in the spirit of Robert Blum. A theater director, journalist, and member of Germany's first national assembly, Blum (1807–1848) championed civil liberties and peaceful societal reform during the 1848/49 revolutions. He fought for press and speech freedoms and engaged with revolutionary movements across Europe.
Worth €25,000, the award is presented biennially to a figure from the fields of culture, the arts, science, religion, politics, or journalism. The first recipient, two years ago, was Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
