Ex-DBS adviser admits to S$1.4m scam funding lavish lifestyle
A former DBS Bank financial adviser has admitted to swindling over S$1 million from seven victims in a two-year scam. Benjamin Chung Hiang Wee pleaded guilty to six cheating charges after tricking people into investing in fake bank products. His crimes funded a lavish lifestyle, including a wedding and home renovations, before he turned himself in earlier this month. Chung’s scheme ran from February 2022 to April 2024. He convinced victims—including his own uncle—that he could offer high-interest fixed deposits and loans through DBS Bank. His uncle alone lost S$441,850 after making multiple transfers, believing he was helping his nephew secure a better financial deal.
The stolen money was used to fuel Chung’s online gambling habit, pay for a wedding, and cover home improvements. Beyond the direct scams, he also moved over S$823,000 of the stolen funds across 32 different accounts. This has led to additional charges for dealing with criminal proceeds. Chung’s fraud came to light after police investigated reports of someone misusing DBS Bank’s name to collect money for non-existent financial products. He was fired by the bank in November 2023 for failing to meet regulatory standards tied to his role. On May 6, 2024, he surrendered to authorities and was arrested immediately. So far, only about S$231,000 of the estimated S$1.4 million stolen has been recovered. Chung will return to court on May 25 for sentencing, with more than a dozen other charges still under consideration.
The case has left victims with significant financial losses, while Chung faces a lengthy legal process. His sentencing next month will determine the consequences for the fraud, which spanned multiple accounts and deceived even close family members. Authorities continue efforts to recover the remaining stolen funds.
