Far-right AfD rally in Münster-Coerde met by larger counter-protest

A far-right rally by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) took place in Münster-Coerde on Saturday. Around 60 party members and supporters gathered at Hamannplatz for the event. Meanwhile, a counter-protest drew roughly 450 people to voice opposition. The AfD rally began at Hamannplatz with about 60 attendees. Party members addressed the crowd, focusing on themes like economic and migration policy. Among them was Linus, a 22-year-old educator from near Münster, who argued that Germany must change its economic and migration policies. He also criticised government spending abroad, stating that billions sent to Ukraine or Israel come at the expense of struggling elderly people in Germany.

The counter-demonstration started at Hohen Heckenweg. It was organised by the alliance 'Not an Inch to the Nazis' and the local initiative 'Coerde is Colorful'. Eve Lyn Gardias, a Coerde resident and member of the initiative, joined the protest. She argued that the AfD provides no real solutions and instead blames marginalised groups for wider societal issues.

A strong police presence was deployed to separate the two groups and maintain order during the demonstrations. The AfD rally and counter-protest unfolded simultaneously in Münster-Coerde. The events highlighted starkly opposing views on national policy and social issues. Police ensured the two demonstrations remained apart throughout the day.
