Far-right ideologue Alain Soral jailed for hate speech in Switzerland

Alain Soral, a far-right ideologue, has received a five-month prison sentence in Switzerland for discrimination, incitement to hatred, and defamation. The ruling follows a series of convictions, including a recent 40-day term for homophobic remarks against a journalist.

The Swiss Federal Court first sentenced Soral in April 2024 to 40 days in prison for targeting a journalist with homophobic statements. This sentence was upheld by Switzerland's Federal Supreme Court later that year. Due to his prior convictions for similar offences, the latest prison term is unconditional.

In addition to imprisonment, Soral was fined 30 daily rates of 170 Swiss francs each, totalling 51,000 Swiss francs. He failed to attend his hearing, and the ruling remains open to appeal. A second investigation is now underway after Soral allegedly made new anti-Semitic remarks between late 2025 and January 2026. Authorities have summoned him for further questioning in this case. Soral moved to the Lausanne area in 2019 to avoid French justice. Reports now suggest he is living in Russia.

The conviction reinforces Switzerland's stance against hate speech and discrimination. Soral faces ongoing legal challenges, including the second case tied to his recent statements. The outcome of that investigation remains pending.
