Hanover's Cup Hero Sievers Aims to Become Mayor - From DFB-Pokal hero to mayoral candidate: Ex-goalie's political play

Jörg Sievers, who won the DFB-Pokal with Hannover 96, is making headlines once again—this time for running in the mayoral election in Springe, near Hanover.

The former Bundesliga goalkeeper is entering politics at 60, standing as the CDU candidate in the race to lead Springe, a town of 30,000 in the Hanover region. The Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung first reported the news, which Sievers later confirmed to Bild.

"Yes, that's true," he said. "I've always been interested in politics and have been a CDU member for several years now." Lower Saxony's local elections are set for September 13.

1992 Cup Hero After Saving Two Penalties

Sievers played 493 professional matches for Hannover 96 across the first, second, and third divisions between 1989 and 2003. He became a legend in 1992 when, as a second-tier side, Hannover 96 lifted the DFB-Pokal—thanks in part to Sievers saving two penalties in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Even in the semifinal victory over Werder Bremen, he had stopped a spot-kick in the shootout before scoring the decisive penalty himself to seal a 6–5 win.
