German citizens unite to defend democracy through local action and events

Over 100 citizens recently gathered to discuss ways of protecting democracy in Germany. The meeting highlighted growing local efforts, including the 'We for Democracy' alliance in Langenfeld. This group, formed in 2021, now has 61 partners and continues to organise public events. The 'Democracy—Right Now!' alliance first launched in Kempen during spring 2021 with eight founding members. Since then, similar initiatives have taken shape in other towns, such as Langenfeld. There, Eva Kirbisch helped organise a pro-democracy rally on February 3, 2024.

At the recent gathering, Kirbisch stressed that democracy must feel engaging to attract participation. She noted that making it enjoyable encourages wider involvement. Professor Klaus Peter Hufer also spoke, praising the civic courage shown in Langenfeld and explaining the importance of March 18 in German democratic history. The alliance is now preparing to open an exhibition titled *The Mothers of the Basic Law* on May 6 at 4 p.m. at Langenfeld's town hall on Buttermarkt. After the exhibition, a World Café will provide a relaxed space for discussions and brainstorming new ideas.

The event in Langenfeld follows years of grassroots action to strengthen democracy. With exhibitions, rallies, and open discussions, local alliances are creating spaces for public engagement. The next opportunity to participate comes on May 6 with the exhibition opening.
