German official urges Catholic Church to reclaim its spiritual mission

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner has called on the Catholic Church to refocus on its core mission. Speaking recently, the CDU politician stressed that the institution must move beyond short-term concerns. Instead, she argued, it should address life’s deeper questions to remain relevant in modern society.

Klöckner highlighted a growing need for spiritual guidance, particularly among younger people facing crises and uncertainty.

Klöckner warned that the Church risks losing its way if it behaves like a political party. By chasing fleeting trends or trying to align with current opinions, it could fail those seeking lasting answers. She pointed to countries like England and France, where the Church has regained approval by focusing on meaning rather than momentary debates.

The former agriculture minister also noted that rituals and stories hold a unique power. These traditions, she believes, can turn the Church into a focal point for people searching for stability. Younger generations, in particular, are looking for a place that speaks to their longing amid modern challenges. While supporting open dialogue within the faith community, Klöckner insisted that discussions must remain respectful. She did not oppose the recent decision to exclude AfD politicians from the Catholic Congress. However, she emphasised that substantive debates should avoid offensive language and personal attacks. Above all, Klöckner urged the Church to offer solace in life’s fundamental questions. Whether through guidance, rituals, or shared reflection, she argued, the institution must rise above the noise of daily politics.

Klöckner’s remarks come as the Catholic Church faces shifting expectations from its followers. Her call for a return to spiritual foundations suggests a path forward—one that prioritises enduring values over temporary approval. The Church’s ability to address deeper human concerns, she implied, will determine its future role in society.
