Germany Awards Five Firms to Expand EV Charging in Underserved Areas
Five operators have secured contracts to expand Germany's public charging network in underserved areas. The selection followed a competitive process that saw eleven providers submit applications between December 2025 and February 2026. Each winner will now develop a bundle of exploration zones for new charging points.
The application window opened on December 18, 2025, and closed two months later. Eleven companies applied, and all met the criteria for consideration. A lottery system determined the final five, with external representatives from the operators and authorities overseeing the draw.
The successful bidders—Enercity AG, Eulektro GmbH, Eze.Network GmbH, Qwello Germany GmbH, and Ubitricity Distributed Energy Systems GmbH—now face a tight schedule. Within six months, they must pinpoint exact locations for charging stations and submit plans to the Road and Traffic Authority. Construction of all new points must finish within two years. None of the selected firms have their headquarters in Germany. The initiative targets regions where charging infrastructure remains sparse, aiming to improve accessibility for electric vehicle users.
The five operators will move forward with site assessments and approvals in the coming months. Once built, the new charging points should fill gaps in the current network. The project marks a step toward broader coverage for drivers across less-served areas.
