Germany Overhauls Housing Benefits to Save €1 Billion by 2027
Germany’s Housing Ministry has announced plans to restructure housing benefit payments to meet strict budget cuts. The changes aim to save one billion euros by 2027 while maintaining support for vulnerable households across the country. This year, the government has set aside €2.4 billion for housing benefits, assisting around 1.2 million households. Despite the financial pressure, officials have ruled out cuts to social housing construction or related funding schemes.
The ministry’s new approach focuses on redesigning how benefits are calculated and distributed. The goal is to make the system fairer and more precise. By adjusting payment structures, the department expects to reach its savings target without reducing overall support for those in need.
The restructuring will help the ministry meet its budget requirements while keeping housing aid intact. The adjustments aim to balance financial responsibility with continued assistance for low-income families. No changes to social housing programmes have been proposed.
