Germany tightens passport rules for Russian residents starting 2026
From January 1, 2026, Russian nationals seeking to apply for or renew residence permits in Germany will face new passport requirements. The German authorities have announced that only valid, biometric Russian passports will be accepted for these processes. Currently, Russian citizens holding residence permits can continue using their 2001-model Russian passport until its expiration. However, from 2026, a new, valid Russian passport will be necessary to renew these residence permits. The non-biometric passports issued in 2001 will no longer be accepted in Germany starting January 1, 2026. This change affects Russian nationals only. German authorities have specified that from 2026, Russian citizens applying for or renewing residence permits must present biometric passports. In summary, Russian nationals planning to apply for or renew residence permits in Germany should ensure they have a valid, biometric Russian passport starting January 1, 2026. Existing non-biometric passports will no longer be accepted.
