Berlin. In the debate sparked by SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch over taking on new debt to fund Germany's response to the Iran conflict, the conservative Union bloc has again warned against such a move.

CDU parliamentary manager Steffen Bilger told the Rheinische Post (Tuesday) on the sidelines of the Union faction's executive retreat in Berlin: "This would also send the wrong signal—it would make politics look utterly uninspired at a time when we face immense challenges."

He noted that the governing coalition is already accumulating debt at levels not seen in years. "More borrowing won't solve our problems—it will only make the future even harder," Bilger added. Instead, he argued, the focus must now be on "reviving the economy, pushing through reforms, and achieving savings in the budget."
