Germany's Green Party debates future after Özdemir's political breakthrough

Cem Özdemir’s recent success has sparked discussions within Germany’s Green Party about its future direction. Senior figures now see his approach as a model for broader appeal. Two key members have weighed in on how the party can build on this momentum.

Omid Nouripour, Vice President of the Bundestag, argued that Özdemir’s achievements prove Green policies can win over voters when they connect with society’s core concerns. He stressed the importance of engaging people without overwhelming them. Listening, rather than lecturing, was key to this success, he added.

Nouripour also warned against internal divisions, stating that fractured parties struggle to win elections. He called on the Greens to show strong backing for Felix Banaszak and Franziska Brantner at the upcoming autumn party conference. Meanwhile, Sebastian Schäfer, coordinator of the Realos faction, described Özdemir’s success as a vital reference point for the party’s federal strategy. His comments reinforced the idea that the Greens must adapt their messaging to maintain relevance on a national scale.

The Green Party now faces a choice: unite behind a more inclusive approach or risk losing ground. Özdemir’s example has set a benchmark for how the party might broaden its appeal. The autumn conference will be a test of whether the Greens can translate this strategy into lasting support.
