Germany's housing construction faces supply shortages and bleak outlook

Germany’s housing construction sector is facing growing challenges as geopolitical tensions weigh on the industry. While current business conditions have remained steady, companies are reporting worsening expectations for the future.

In April, 43.8 percent of firms continued to cite insufficient orders as a major issue, a figure unchanged from previous months. The cancellation rate also stayed nearly flat at 10.8 percent, showing little improvement in demand.

At the same time, material shortages are becoming a bigger problem. Some 9.2 percent of surveyed companies reported disruptions in supplies, particularly for key raw materials. Concerns over bottlenecks have grown stronger in recent weeks. Beyond immediate supply issues, businesses are now far more pessimistic about the months ahead. Assessments of current operations have also weakened, reflecting broader uncertainty in the sector.

The combination of persistent order shortages, supply chain risks, and a bleaker outlook suggests further strain on Germany’s housing construction industry. With geopolitical instability adding pressure, firms are bracing for a more difficult operating environment in the near term.
