Germany's Merz visits India to boost trade and tech partnerships
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is visiting India this week to strengthen ties in trade, defence and technology. The trip comes as Indian businesses, like Düsseldorf-based Techno Design, look to expand operations and investment between the two countries. Both nations see opportunities in deeper economic cooperation. Techno Design, a fashion firm founded by Indian entrepreneur Rajive Ranjan, specialises in digital clothing designs for major German and US brands. Using 3D visualisation, the company produces its collections across India, China and Bangladesh. Ranjan, who serves as CEO, believes a future free trade deal could lower tariffs and improve access to skilled workers.
The company now plans to grow its India-based workforce to meet rising demand. It is also investing further in AI-driven fashion development. Ranjan sees significant potential in stronger trade links, particularly as local business networks, such as the India Competence Center, report growing German interest in India as a diversified economic partner. Meanwhile, New Delhi is seeking German investment and advanced technology. The aim is to balance China’s influence and reduce reliance on Russia. Merz’s visit signals a push for closer collaboration in key sectors.
Techno Design’s expansion reflects broader efforts to deepen India-Germany economic ties. The company’s focus on AI and digital fashion aligns with India’s push for high-tech partnerships. With Merz’s visit underway, both sides are exploring ways to boost trade and investment in the coming years.
