Drunk drivers flee after single-vehicle crash near Braunschweig motorway
A single-vehicle crash at the Braunschweig-Süd motorway junction caused disruption on Tuesday morning. A white Citroën left the road, hitting trees before stopping against a guardrail. The driver and passenger then fled the scene on foot. Witnesses provided descriptions that led police to apprehend two men, aged 39 and 43. Neither showed visible injuries, but both displayed clear signs of intoxication. Blood samples were taken for further testing.
One of the men was confirmed as the car’s registered owner. However, investigators are still determining who was driving at the time of the accident. The crash forced authorities to close the area for roughly two and a half hours while they reconstructed the incident and cleared debris.
The Citroën was later impounded, and both men had their driver’s licences confiscated. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Police continue to examine evidence to establish which man was behind the wheel. The road has since reopened, but the incident highlights the risks of impaired driving.
