Haßelmann: Don't Lose Empathy in Challenging Times - Green Party leader slams Germany’s ‘disgraceful’ refugee and climate policies under black-red coalition

Green Party co-leader Britta Haßelmann has slammed the black-red federal government's approach to Syrian refugees and climate protection, describing it as 'disgraceful' and 'backward-looking'. She also expressed bewilderment at the CDU's stance on certain issues.

Haßelmann criticised the government for sending letters via the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) offering financial assistance to Afghans on the condition they abandon plans to enter Germany. She argued that this practice was a 'disgraceful deal' that lacked empathy, even in difficult times.

She also warned that climate protection measures were being rolled back under the current government. Haßelmann expected stagnation under CDU leader Friedrich Merz but found rapid regression instead. She argued that the Greens remained the only party committed to reconciling economic growth with climate action.

CDU foreign policy spokesman Johann Wadephul faced criticism for stating that a dignitable life is impossible in war-torn Syria. Conservative politicians were quick to react, 'virtually pouncing' on him for confronting them with reality about the situation in Syria.

Britta Haßelmann has spoken out against the black-red government's handling of refugee issues and climate protection. She has called for more empathy and a commitment to progressive policies, warning against the influence of fossil interests within the government coalition.
