Hanover. Michael Lühmann, the Green Party's interior policy spokesperson in the state parliament, has sharply criticized the CDU's debate surrounding the death of a 16-year-old girl in Friedland. In a speech during the CDU's question hour, he accused the party of reducing the discussion from the outset to the issue of deportation and detention pending deportation.
Green Party slams CDU over rushed blame in teen's tragic death
This approach was wholly inappropriate given the tragedy of the case, Lühmann argued.
He posed several rhetorical questions to the CDU, including whether it had been right to speak of systemic institutional failure when the facts of the matter were not yet understood. He also condemned calls for a parliamentary inquiry before basic parliamentary rights to information had been fully exercised.
Lühmann further criticized the personal attacks against the interior minister and staff at the State Reception Authority (LABNI), calling them completely over the line.
The lawmaker demanded a change in the tone of political debate, emphasizing that the case should prompt a closer examination of how society treats individuals with mental health struggles.
Lühmann explicitly expressed his support for LABNI employees, who must navigate constantly shifting legal frameworks. He urged all parliamentary groups to learn from the tragic death of the 16-year-old girl and commit to engaging with one another with greater respect in the future.
