Halle Honors Teen Killed Fleeing East Germany in 1979
The city of Halle (Saale) will officially name its student dormitory after Heiko Runge in a plaque-unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, April 29, at 10:30 a.m. Katharina Brederlow, the city's deputy mayor for education and social affairs, will welcome guests at the dormitory in Neustadt, Gustav-Weidanz-Weg 3, on behalf of the lord mayor.
Heiko Runge, a 15-year-old student from Halle-Neustadt, was fatally shot by two East German border guards in December 1979 while attempting to flee across the inner-German border. The city council unanimously approved naming the municipal student dormitory in his honor. The initiative was launched by Michael Teupel, who will attend the event.
