City Council Debate on Special Fund: CDU and SPD Seek to Postpone School Toilets and Europachaussee with Amendment Motion
Halle revisits stalled fund resolution with August vote on key projects
The Halle city council faces something of a paradoxical situation at today's Wednesday session. The municipal administration has proposed an amendment to the fundamental resolution governing the city's special fund. The fund includes €1 million earmarked for renovating school sanitation facilities in Halle (Saale), as well as €15 million for extending the Osttangente bypass through Ammendorf. While council factions had pushed for these allocations in the initial round back in March, they failed to secure a majority at the time. Now, following clarification of federal regulations, the city is adjusting its resolution accordingly.
Yet it is precisely the CDU and SPD who are hitting the brakes. The two factions have submitted a joint amendment motion—and its most significant provision is that the existing list should remain unchanged for now. This means that planned new projects, including the Osttangente extension and school toilet upgrades, would not be included.
While the factions do not intend to abandon these projects entirely, they argue that alternative funding options should first be explored for the Europachaussee, school toilets, Künstlerhaus 188, the Heidestraße bike path, and the USV outdoor sports hall. Mayor Vogt is then expected to present a revised resolution at the August council meeting and incorporate it into the investment planning for the coming years.
