Halle (Saale) pushes for Eurocities membership to unlock EU opportunities
Halle (Saale) is set to apply for membership in Eurocities, the influential network of Europe’s largest urban centres. Lord Mayor Dr. Alexander Vogt has announced plans to fast-track the city’s entry, aiming to secure greater EU funding and international visibility. The decision now lies with the city council, which will weigh both costs and potential benefits. Founded in 1986, Eurocities represents over 200 major cities across 38 countries. It acts as the main voice for urban areas in discussions with the European Commission, helping shape policies and funding opportunities.
Mayor Vogt sees joining as a key move for Halle’s future. Membership could strengthen the city’s identity, improve access to EU grants, and boost its standing alongside metropolises like Paris, Berlin, and Barcelona. Local clubs and organisations might also gain from new transnational partnerships. The city council must now decide whether to approve the application. Fees for membership will be considered alongside the long-term financial returns from EU projects. Vogt has made clear his intention to speed up the process, arguing that the benefits outweigh the costs.
If approved, Halle would become part of a network that connects Europe’s most influential cities. The move could open doors to funding, collaborations, and a stronger role in EU decision-making. The council’s final decision will determine whether the city takes this step forward.
