Halle (Saale) Revives Global Ties Under Mayor Vogt's Bold New Strategy
Halle (Saale) is making a fresh push to strengthen its global ties after years of limited engagement. Mayor Dr. Alexander Vogt has declared international relations a key priority, calling it a strategic necessity rather than an optional extra. The city now aims to position itself as an active and visible player in Europe. For decades, Halle lacked even a single staff member dedicated to international affairs. That gap is now being addressed as the city expands its team to build a permanent hub for global cooperation. Vogt has criticised past leaders for treating these relationships as an afterthought, insisting they must now take centre stage.
One of Halle’s oldest partnerships is with Grenoble, France, which recently marked 50 years of friendship. The bond was celebrated with the opening of *Place de Halle* in Grenoble, a public space named in honour of the connection. Culturally, the two cities are growing closer through museum exchanges, giving Halle’s arts scene a new international dimension. The city is also deepening ties with Oulu, Finland, focusing on technology and education. As a symbolic gesture, Oulu gifted Halle two reindeer, which now live in the local zoo. Meanwhile, cooperation with Karlsruhe, Germany, has intensified through regular working visits, staff exchanges between administrations, and joint projects. Vogt wants these partnerships to reach beyond official meetings. His plan includes involving schools and local clubs in direct exchanges with Halle’s sister cities. The goal is to make international connections a visible part of daily life for residents.
Halle’s renewed focus on global engagement comes with concrete steps: a growing team, cultural exchanges, and stronger links with partner cities. The mayor’s strategy shifts international relations from the sidelines to a core part of the city’s future. Schools, clubs, and public spaces will now play a role in bringing these connections to life.
