New Theater Halle Invites All to a Diverse May Day Celebration on University Square

On May 1, 2026, neues theater Halle will host a vibrant program on University Square, blending tradition and contemporary culture to create an open space for dialogue, music, and shared experiences.

The event kicks off with speeches on the main stage, exploring the historical and present-day significance of May Day. Featured guests include Halle-based contemporary witness and psychiatrist Peter Jeschke, a co-founder of the Neues Forum in 1989; Elke Prinz of Dornröschen e.V., a recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit; political scientist and DaMigra executive director Dr. Delal Atmacı; and representatives from the arts and civil society. Contributions will also come from the "Echo Halle" project, Radio Corax editors, and the neues theater's support association. The program will be moderated by Mille Maria Dalsgaard, artistic director of neues theater and Thalia Theater. Following the speeches, the ensemble will lead a traditional May Day sing-along.

A highlight of the event is the "First Open-Air Roundtable", inspired by the spirit of 1989, where participants will discuss labor, society, and political engagement. Confirmed speakers include city writer Aron Boks, Peter Jeschke, and members of neues theater. Additional roundtable discussions are planned through September 2026.

Across University Square, visitors can explore a rich lineup of interactive activities, information booths, and artistic performances. Families will enjoy a bouncy castle, children's circus, clown shows, and craft stations. Live music will be provided by the bands Preliminary Injunction (featuring Alexander Suckel) and Trostland (Tristan Becker), along with performances by the Halle Opera's Children's and Youth Choir, directed by Bartholomew Berzonsky, and ensemble members presenting songs from current productions.

Food and drink will be available from Strieses Biertunnel, a cake fair in the neues theater courtyard, and the open nt-Café. The offerings are rounded out by a mocktail stand and a mobile box office with special holiday promotions.
