Hannover and Göttingen face transport chaos as strikes hit buses and trams

Public transport workers in Hannover and Göttingen will stage warning strikes over the next three days. The action, called by the ver.di trade union, follows stalled wage negotiations. Employees from buses, trams and regional services will join picket lines and rallies in both cities. The strikes begin early in Göttingen. Picket lines will form outside depots at 4:30 AM on May 19 and 20. Staff from Göttinger Verkehrsbetriebe and RegioBus will walk out on both days. A rally is also planned in Göttingen on May 19, starting at 9:30 AM.

In Hannover, Üstra workers will strike on May 20 and 21. A demonstration will take place on May 20 at 10:30 AM, while striking employees gather at the Glocksee depot on May 21.

Stefanie Weiß, deputy head of ver.di’s Lower Saxony-Bremen division, criticised employers for refusing to engage in meaningful talks. The union has scheduled the next round of negotiations for June 1. The strikes will disrupt bus, tram and regional transport services across both cities. Ver.di has warned of further action if no progress is made before June. Commuters are advised to check for updates before travelling.
